Pack as little as possible.
Take only two credit cards, keep them in different locations, and split your cash and traveler's checks also. If you lose one wallet, you aren't helpless. Make a photo copy of your credit cards, driver's license, insurance certificate, etc. so if any are lost or stolen they can be replaced easily.
Get a decent pair of soft saddle bags. I've run mine without supports for years and, as long as you are careful when mounting them, they don't get in the wheel, belt etc.
A travel pack of some sort is great, especially if you can mount it behind you to use as a backrest.
Carry everything as low as possible. Keep center of gravity low.
If you know where you will be staying, mail stuff to yourself instead of carrying it.
When you head home, mail stuff home instead of carrying it.
Carry something for self-defense. Use only something you are familiar with and are willing to use. Keep it where you can get it easily, not in the bottom of your saddlebag.
MOST IMPORTANT!!!!! HAVE FUN!!!!
